Baduizm: The Debut Album by Erykah Badu
Baduizm is the first studio album by American singer-songwriter Erykah Badu, released on February 11, 1997 by Kedar Records and Universal Records[^2^]. The album was a critical and commercial success, earning Badu multiple awards and nominations, including two Grammy Awards. Baduizm showcased Badu's unique musical style, which blended elements of soul, jazz, hip hop, and African music.
The album was recorded in various studios across the United States, with the help of several producers and musicians, such as Madukwu Chinwah, James Poyser, The Roots, and Ron Carter. Badu wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on the album, drawing inspiration from her personal experiences, spirituality, and social issues. Some of the songs were based on a 19-song demo tape that Badu recorded with her cousin Robert \"Free\" Bradford, titled Country Cousins[^2^].
Baduizm spawned four singles: \"On & On\", \"Next Lifetime\", \"Otherside of the Game\", and \"Apple Tree\". The lead single, \"On & On\", was a worldwide hit, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also won Badu her first Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. The second single, \"Next Lifetime\", was a moderate success, peaking at number 29 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The third single, \"Otherside of the Game\", featured rap group The Roots and reached number 56 on the same chart. The fourth and final single, \"Apple Tree\", was released only in Europe and Australia.
Baduizm received widespread acclaim from critics, who praised Badu's vocals, lyrics, and production. The album was ranked among the best albums of 1997 by several publications, such as Rolling Stone, Spin, The Village Voice, and Entertainment Weekly. The album also earned Badu several accolades, including four Grammy nominations (winning two), three Soul Train Music Awards (winning one), two NAACP Image Awards (winning one), and two American Music Awards (winning one). As of 2015, the album has sold over three million copies in the United States and over seven million copies worldwide.Baduizm also received widespread acclaim from music critics, who praised Badu's distinctive voice, poetic lyrics, and eclectic production. The album was hailed as a refreshing alternative to the mainstream R&B and hip hop of the time, and as a landmark of the neo-soul movement. Pitchfork gave the album a rare 9.5 out of 10 rating, calling it \"an existential anchor of the neo-soul movement\" and \"a full of control and surrender at the same time\"[^1^]. Rolling Stone gave the album four out of five stars, noting Badu's \"uncanny vocal similarity to Billie Holiday\" and her ability to \"filter jazz vocals through hip-hop without any fuss or fanfare\"[^2^]. AllMusic gave the album three and a half out of five stars, acknowledging that \"for every intriguing track like 'Next Lifetime,' there's at least one rote R&B jam like '4 Leaf Clover'\" but also stating that \"Baduizm showcases the heart and soul of a bohemian B-girl who happens to have an effortless jazz swing\"[^3^].
Baduizm also influenced a generation of artists who followed in Badu's footsteps, such as Lauryn Hill, India.Arie, Alicia Keys, Janelle MonÃe, Solange, and SZA. Badu herself continued to evolve her sound and style on her subsequent albums, such as Mama's Gun (2000), Worldwide Underground (2003), New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) (2008), and New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) (2010). She also became known for her eccentric personality, fashion sense, activism, and live performances. Badu remains one of the most respected and influential artists in contemporary R&B and soul music, as well as a cultural icon and a spiritual leader for many fans. Baduizm is not only her debut album but also her manifesto, a statement of artistic vision and personal philosophy that still resonates today. 248dff8e21
