Joan Armatrading was born on 9 December 1950 in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis. She moved to England with her family when she was seven years old. She taught herself to play guitar and piano, and started writing songs when she was 14. She left school at 15 and worked in various jobs while pursuing her musical career.
She made her first recording in 1972, a single called Lonely Lady, which was co-written by her then partner Pam Nestor. She then signed with Cube Records and released her debut album Whatever's for Us in 1972, which was produced by Gus Dudgeon. She later moved to A&M Records and worked with producer Glyn Johns on her second album Back to the Night, which was released in 1975.
Her breakthrough came with her third album Joan Armatrading, which was released in 1976 and featured her hit song Love and Affection. The album reached number 12 on the UK Albums Chart and number 26 on the US Billboard 200. It also earned her a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance - Female.
Since then, Joan Armatrading has released over 20 studio albums, as well as several live albums and compilations. Some of her most notable albums include Me Myself I (1980), The Key (1983), Sleight of Hand (1986), The Shouting Stage (1988), Square The Circle (1992), Lovers Speak (2003), This Charming Life (2010) and Not Too Far Away (2018).
