Almost ten years ago, Limbo made the leap from PC onto consoles, and has since grown a dedicated following due to its mix of the familiar platform puzzle-platform gameplay, and a series of solo scares that freak out players. You take the role of a boy struggling to survive on a forgotten island in a lonely cursed world.
Limbo is hard to describe, but we'll give it a whirl. It feels like a scary survival game that's also about puzzle-solving and platforming, with a dash of horror. The best way to describe it is to imagine Portal meets Super Meat Boy meets Lumpy Space Princess, but slightly more clever. In Limbo, you'll need to travel from one distant place to another on a blocked-off island, avoiding enemies (not unlike the undead in George A Romero's Night of the Living Dead), solving puzzles (light-sensitive blocks to solve, for example), and occasionally detouring into creepy corners.
The story of Limbo takes place in the year 200X, and the game begins with the protagonist waking up in an old research lab on a small island, having been buried in a secret cave for over a hundred years. Little does Limbo know, as he awakes, that he is in the beginning, the dawn, before the world was burnt to ash by a plague of monsters known as the Noisemakers.
In the first Limbo, you play as a boy named Limbo, who wakes up on an island with a bright, sunlit landscape beyond his cot, a devilish spider spirit named Arach, and no memory of how he got there. You'll play through the game from his perspective as he tries to work out where he is; fortunately, you have the help of a mysterious voice known as the Spirit of the Forest.
Immerse yourself in the twisted story of Limbo, where nothing is as it seems. Follow a young boy as he explores a perilous world, exploring the source of a radio transmission that seems to come from a mysterious tower.
The superb soundtrack is exceptionally well done and adds depth to a game that lacks the large scope that was present in Limbo or even the original concept idea for Headlander. The haunting melodies and samples really drive home how dire the situation is for you, and they do it in an unsettling manner. It feels like you're experiencing a nightmare, and the tension and fear that is conveyed makes it that much more memorable.
