The practice of duelling often involved honor both of the individual and of the family, for example by ensuring that family honor was not sullied in the affair. An anonymous duel of honor was written at the time of the tradition, by a writer of the period, is part of the verse known as The Old English Tune of Grosse-l'Austrein, performed by the master of the minstrel, or trouvère, Heinrich Staffel. The words of the German ballad talk of a traditional duel between two brothers, called hostes amicos, or host at one's brother. One of the two tells the other, as a mark of honor, that he will fight him at any place except in the presence of his wife. The verse then follows the fight, which ends with the death of one of the two brothers. By the late 18th century, the duel as an organized combat had died out in Germany and was struggling in Spain and Italy. It was rivalled in popularity throughout the rest of Europe by the duel fought with swords, a contact sport, and by duels fought with fists, a sport that became known as the English fight. In the south of France, an Italian type of pistol duel was still played with wax bullets.
Southern Italian families, taking their responsibility of a code of honor from the feudal system, were less enthusiastic with the idea of a duel. The middle class of the north of Italy were the first to import the duel from the south when, in the 19th century, the royal family of Naples used to fight challenges as a means to settle personal ambitions and vendettas.
Nineteenth century duels occurred in India, related to stately formalities in Hindu and Muslim cultures. After World War I, there were many duels in New England and the New York area, and a few in the rest of the United States, usually related to the Old West and Old South. d2c66b5586
