The entire space occupied by the Singer Building was painted red. Employees and tenants on the upper floors were discouraged from removing or destroying the interior red color, and the use of red paint had to be approved by the Singer Building's architects.[42] The high-relief sculptures on the facade were stylistically similar to those on the Empire State Building in New York City, except that the sculptures were not unified by any compositional scheme or motif.[143] For instance, reliefs on the Singer Building's Liberty Street facade included a clock, a female figure, a pair of male figures and a female figure again, surrounded by water drops.[143] The reliefs had been designed by sculptor John Quincy Wolfskill.[143] Other reliefs on the facade of the Singer Building's Liberty Street elevation included two figures in a doorway, surrounded by water drops. The female figure was surrounded by water drops, a male figure, a female figure surrounded by water drops, a female figure surrounded by water drops to complete the design. The figures represented wheat and corn, respectively.[43]
A 125-foot (38 m) -high extension with a mansard roof was added to the Singer Building's original east facade, connecting it to the Bourne Building. The extension had the same proportions as the original Singer Building.[23] The extension's fifth-floor elevation was composed of large limestone panels, supported by large shafts, which were covered with Vignola-pattern terra-cotta tile. The marble bas-reliefs had cost $1 million. Some of the reliefs on the fifth floor of the extension included a female figure leaning against a wall, while a seated male figure in the center depicted a struggling bull. The figure with reclining posture was said to symbolize the avarice of Wall Street traders, while the fellow in the center symbolized the virtues of work and honest dealing in New York.[44] A majestic female figure was located above the opposite entrance, between the two bay windows. That figure was said to represent frugality, industry and protection of New York.[45] d2c66b5586
